I was upgrading from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium. The upgrade process was very easy, just insert the disc and choose the “Upgrade” option. The rest is pretty much just waiting until it’s done. For me it took about two hours – I have a lot of files – and when I was done all my settings were the same and my files were in the same place. Windows 7 looks very clean, also the improvements to the interface are well done. I had no trouble whatsoever with older devices like my all-in-one printer. There is a notable improvement in the speed at which in wakes up from sleep mode. I have only been using it for two days now, but so far I am very happy and have had no problems at all. If you’re not planing on buying a new computer soon, than this upgrade is worth serious consideration.

Overall very happy with Windows 7 and the improvements Microsoft made in terms of user hassle, boot up and shut down times, cleaner UI with some real productivity boosters. There’s a lot to like here and I haven’t mentioned them all (other reviewers have done a fine job with that). But if you look at what all Microsoft could have done there’s a lot here not to like as well.
For example, consider Windows competition: Ubuntu Linux and Apple’s Snow Leopard…. There’s not so many versions to pick from. You can justify a Server OS edition and a Client edition and for years Windows only come in those flavors… Then you have to look at price to upgrade, Windows is the most expensive by far and the crippled Home Premium edition will frustrate power uses just as much as Vista did (albeit on more stable, zippy platform than Vista).
I’m also furious with Microsoft over restriction of 32-bit to 64-bit upgrade path… There are plenty of Windows Vista 32-bit installs out there on Pentium D, Intel Core 2 Duo and Pentium Dual Core chipsets that should be running 64-bit Windows, but the PC vendor had 32-bit Vista preloaded… Such users can only perform an upgrade to Windows 7 32-bit. There’s still a distinction between 32-bit and 64-bit OS installs; Apple did away with that years ago with Mac OS X… So let’s not pretend Microsoft is innovating here, they are still trying to play catch up and haven’t quite caught up.
I did not buy the upgrade, but bought a new PC with Windows 7 preloaded… After performing my first log in I installed a new video card and rebooted. It was an ATI Radeon 4850 (fully supported by Windows 7), the OS could not locate a driver, it went into Repair mode, repair mode failed and I had to go out to the web to download the drivers… No biggie, but don’t come in thinking Windows 7 is a perfect OS.
Overall a welcome stable new version of Windows, which is probably the best version of Windows to date…. but it could have been a lot better considering what the competition is doing and no one seems to be talking about that (Microsoft should give their PR guys and gals a hefty Christmas bonus this year)

I used the “final release” beta. I’ll upgrade to windows 7 when it expires in Feb.
Overall, I like it. I hate that they got rid of the “file” menu, that was one of the only easy-to-understand features. So its a big hard to find your way around program’s options & advanced options menu.
It’s really fast, and quite pretty.
All my drivers worked fine.
Install was simple and worked fine.
I’ve gotten one “blue screen of death”, but that was it.
If you can afford it, get a mac. It’s a better experience. Otherwise, this is decent. Certainly much better than vista, and much better than XP.

With the release of Windows 7 on October 22, 2009, many people are wondering if it’s time to upgrade from Windows Vista or even XP. I’m here to say that it definitely is. I pre-ordered Windows 7 for only $50 when they had the promotion running and downloaded the .iso file on the 22nd. Alot of reviewers out there are saying to avoid the in-place upgrade and go for a clean install, and for the most part, I would agree. However, with some pre-planning, the upgrade process was smooth as silk for me.
First of all, back up your important files. For me, that meant copying the my user profile folder to a separate hard drive. After insuring all my files were there, I made a list of all the programs I regularly use. For those that I downloaded and did not have a disk for, I copied the program installers to the external hard drive as well. Next, I started deleting all the files and uninstalling as many programs from the main hard drive as possible. This may seem like an extra step but here’s the reason. When you choose the upgrade path, it places all of your old files and programs in a folder on the C: drive called Windows.old . During the install, placing all of those files in the Windows.old folder is one of the most time-consuming aspects. For me, the install only took 30 minutes, whereas previously it had taken up to 2 hours.
Once the install is complete, make sure to run Windows Update to get all the security updates as well as any driver updates. The whole process was a snap, and easily one of the easiest Windows installs in years. From using the beta for several months, and my 3 days with the retail release, I highly recommend upgrading to Windows 7.
